First Elk Hunt
Maurice Liboiron from Edmonton, Alberta shot this elk on September 17, 2001, west of Calgary. He was hunting with his good friend, Yves Ouellette. Other than a couple days of scouting, it was the first day Maurice ever hunted elk. It was an evening hunt they will never forget. They checked out a spot Yves had seen elk at a couple years earlier. Sure enough, within 100 yards of that previous sighting they ran into a herd of about 15 elk. The herd bull continually drove off 3 satellite bulls who tried to court his
cows. Yves and Maurice were able to sneak within 150 yards of the commotion and waited on a clear shot of the herd bull. With 20 minutes of legal hunting light left, the herd bull gave Maurice an open lane after chasing one of the satellite bulls away from his cows. A rough green score grossed the bull at 356 1/2, he should net around 340 after the 60 day drying period. Most people would agree, Maurice's elk hunting days are all downhill from here on in. Congratulations Mo!
